Closing the gap between Style and Substance
Caring about how we reflect our inner selves in our clothing choices should definitely include the substantive changes we want to make to help Mother Nature retain her beauty and power. Many of our designers are making the steps to insure we can both love fashion and the environment by not only their production methods (small batches, made close to home, built to last, and shrinking waste in production) but also in the fabrics they choose. This season the shop is full of soft, luxurious, breathable fabrics that are also substantively better for the environment. Here is a little bit about the most popular eco-fabrics in the shop:
- Tencel is made from 99% non-toxic solvents which is continuously recycled during production. This fibre can be recycled and is biodegradable. It also creates significantly lower emissions and water waste than cotton.
- Linen uses the whole flax plant leaving no waste. Flax grows naturally and requires less water and fewer pesticides than cotton. It's also recyclable and biodegradable.
- Hemp requires no pesticides to grow and thrives on little water. Most remarkably it returns 60-70% of the nutrients it takes from the soil back into it.
- Organic cotton uses far less water and crops aren't treated with pesticides/insectisides/herbicides/GMOs.
