Vera Véro Collection Launch!
Vera Véro, formerly Nokomis Clothing, is the culmination of a 15-year collaboration between longtime friends & colleagues Elizabeth Hudson and Jessica Kennedy.
Currently we are offering a one-time-only capsule collection featuring ten pieces from their archives. Vera Véro strive to make timeless dresses designed to last beyond one season. All of their garments are made in ethical workshops in Montreal, Canada.
Nokomis Clothing was founded in 2002 by Virginia (Gini) Bray and Chad Gentes. The name Nokomis, meaning 'my grandmother', was chosen from the Anishinaabe language to honour Véronique ‘Vera’ Lamoureux, an Oji-Cree Mètis from southern Manitoba, and the grandmother of Chad.
When Elizabeth and Jessica, took over the business in 2007 they sought to uphold the ideals that Gini and Chad had set in place. In this light, and thanks to engaged voices in our community today, they acknowledge that indigenous languages are not ours to use or borrow. They offer a sincere apology for their use of the Ojibwe language.
From this point forward they will be known as Vera Véro. With the blessing of Véronique's family, they chose this name to continue to honour Véronique herself. They will be donating 10% of the proceeds from the capsule collection to the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women (IAAW), an Alberta-based non-profit organization which recognizes the role, value, and achievements of Aboriginal women in society and raises awareness about the challenges and obstacles Aboriginal women face.
