Finding the Perfect Vintage Dress

As most of you know, our Spring vintage sale is just around the corner and we wanted to give y'all some tips on how to find that perfect dress. Our pals at The White Elephant whom we host this sale with every year gave some amazing advice on their blog that we really want to share with you.
As you know, the four of us went down to Cleveland to find you all some amazing new dresses, and we definitely delivered! BUT we also made it a point to find a variety of sizes so there's something for everyone, whether you're a size 0 or a size 16. With that being said, vintage dresses are generally much more tailored and fitted to the body than the dresses we buy today, so it's important to keep an open mind when perusing the racks. A lot of times, you might see a dress and automatically assume it will be too big or too small, but you really really have to just try it on! I have been buying vintage dresses for years, and often I am surprised at how often I try a dress that I thought wouldn't fit and it's actually perfect! Albeit sometimes they end up just a little snug, but usually the darts can be let out so I can breathe a little easier.
Here's a little sneak peak at some of the treasures we found!

Another thing to keep in mind is that back in the day, undergarments were much more complex than what we're buying now, and the super tailored fits of dresses required even the slimmest women to wear girdles and all sorts of shapewear. Jane mentioned that this dress was just not going to happen when she first attempted it over her hips, but then when we she tried it on again over a "smoothing" slip, it slid right on! So don't be worried if you have to throw on a pair of control top pantyhose or maybe even a slightly more or less padded bra, once you find what works with the dress you'll see and amazing difference in the fit!
And as always, we can recommend a very talented seamstress for all other alterations you might want to make, be it bringing a drop waist to your natural waist or hemming a long gown! You always have room to customize the dress so it ends up exactly how you like it!

We also have a beautiful selection of potential bridesmaid and wedding dresses, or even just lovely dresses to wear to a summer wedding or shower! We've also featured some sweet day dresses that will be great for a bike ride to your favourite picnic spot. So make sure to come check out the sale at Dalhousie on Friday May 23rd from 4-8 pm, and Saturday May 24th from 10-6 pm!
